Nathan Barton, community independent candidate for Moore, will host a public forum on Tuesday on how governments can better invest in mental health prevention, to reduce individual suffering and promote healthier communities.
"Prevention is Priceless: Investing in Preventative Mental Health" will feature an expert panel, harnessing insights from people with Lived Experience and discussing the long-term commitments needed for systemic change.
"While I welcome promises from both major parties for more money for mental health treatment if elected, more needs to be done to prevent the onset and escalation of mental ill-health,” said Mr Barton.
“The mental health crisis isn’t just about individuals, it’s about community needs too. The solutions aren’t just quick fixes focussed on treatment; systemic change requires longer term commitment and leadership, instead of a constant focus on the three-year election cycle.”
“Mental health is one of the key issues I'm hearing about from people in Moore. If we don't get serious about prevention and community-based support, we'll be forever funding crisis beds with people continuing to suffer in increasing numbers.”
As a psychologist, Mr Barton has worked with veterans and local families for 18 years.
“I've seen firsthand how mental health challenges affect our whole community. This election, Moore voters can elect a professional with a genuine focus on long-term planning and real solutions to build connected and healthy communities,” said Mr Barton.
